Overview:
Based on specific stated objectives perform analysis, design, or test of one or more complex materials, structural components or functional systems of company products. Without detailed direction, study basic design concepts and criteria for assigned complex materials, components, or functional systems to ascertain the engineering principles involved and to adopt features from previously successful designs of a similar nature. With general direction, plan, prepare, and complete the design of assigned complex components and functional systems. Study the operation of systems, select major components to meet functional and operational requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing, and service standpoint. Direct the more detailed analysis and design and follow up to assure compliance with original philosophy and good engineering practices. Develop general test program to evaluate new materials of products.
Job Description:Under the guidance of a lead engineer, the candidate will: a) ensure that customer driven Parts, Materials and Process (PMAP) specifications are met, b) assist with the creation of internal ADPML (As Designed Parts Material List) for various hardware used on flight vehicle, c) review and approve supplier's ADPML, d) creation of database to store ADPMLs, d) perform galvanic corrosion compatiblity analysis for various interfaces, e) general material compatiblity from Orbital's internal design standard requirements, and f) interace with integrated product teams at Orbital. The candidate will be required to present results for presentation orally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advance degree in materials science is preferred.
Qualifications:A Bachelors Degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physics.
Five years of related experience is required.
A basic knowledge of metals, plastics, elastomers, polymer composites, and ceramic materials is required. Knowledge of material degradation mechanisms such as creep, corrosion, and others, and knowledge of failure analysis and fracture mechanics is preferred. Visiting suppliers to review their internal procedures and methods for maintaining traceability. Background in metallic, polymeric, and/or electronic parts and materials and their processing including material and process selection, characterization, and testing, are desired.
Some specific job qualifications are:
1. Selection of proper specifications and drawing notes to ensure PMAP/customer compliance. This includes material, welding, heat treatment, finishes, galvanic compatibility, packaging somewhat, understanding sequence of processing, ensuring manufacturability and process sequence.
2. Visiting suppliers to review their internal procedures and methods for maintaining traceability.
