Spacecraft Operations Engineer for Herschel and Planck

For the location in Darmstadt, Germany we are looking for a Spacecraft Operations Engineer for Herschel and Planck (f/m) at ESOC. This is an opportunity to transfer into spacecraft operations.
Tasks

The Spacecraft Operations Engineer (SOE) position aims to cover the following fields of expertise in the Herschel and Planck Missions:
  • Prime on-board data handling system engineer for Planck
  • Back-up on-board data handling system engineer for Herschel
  • One or two disciplines out of Power, Thermal and TT&C System in the role of the prime engineer for the Herschel Mission
Consequently, the candidate shall have good operational experience and a deeper knowledge in On-board Data Handling Systems and also knowledge at least in one of the other subsystems mentioned above, i.e Power, Thermal, TT&C (Telecommunication). She/he shall have demonstrated in the past the ability to conduct detailed performance analysis on her/his own initiative.

The exact allocation will depend on the professional experience. The tasks allocation could change in course of the mission if need arises due to changes in the team. Independent from the task allocation the routine tasks/responsibilities will be:
  • Perform day to day monitoring of the assigned subsystem performance and health status assessment, including anomaly investigation, its tracking & follow-up
  • Prepare/conduct/report on any manual operations (e.g. eclipse or manoeuvres operations, testing and engineering activity, etc.). This will include critical operations on console
  • Participate with the other SOEs in the weekly on-call duty cycle, incl. the weekly and monthly reporting
  • Maintain the relevant procedures of the Flight Operations Plan
Essential requirements:

For the accomplishment of the listed tasks, knowledge and experience of the following is mandatory:
  • A university degree preferably in aerospace, electronics or physics
  • Capability to work with MS Office suite, including data processing tools (Excel and the like)
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with little or no supervision
  • System-minded and a team player able to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Motivation and capability to familiarize fast with the platform, payload and the mission control system
Desirable Skills:

The following knowledge and experience would be an asset:
  • Good general knowledge of all spacecraft systems
  • Experience in spacecraft operations is highly desired
  • Familiarity with the ESOC operations environment to allow a fast start
Other information:
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory
  • Must be an EU national or possess a valid German Work & Residence Permit
  • Interviews are foreseen to take place on 20 January 2012 at Esoc
  • Start date is February 2012
